Following two years of intensive collaboration, seven of Ireland’s leading construction firms have launched the Sustainability Common Assessment (SCA). Developed by BAM Ireland, Cairn, Collen, John Paul Construction, JJ Rhatigan, Sisk and Walls Construction – with Supplyo as delivery partner – this landmark initiative standardises sustainability reporting across the supply chain to drive lasting sector-wide transformation.

Launched in July, the SCA initiative directly targets a persistent operational bottleneck: suppliers and subcontractors being repeatedly required to fill out varied, time-consuming questionnaires for different customers. By introducing a standardised, central framework, the SCA eliminates unnecessary duplication. Operating on a practical shared-cost model, suppliers pay a nominal subscription fee of €360 plus VAT annually. In return, they maintain a single, live sustainability profile that can be updated continuously and securely shared with all participating main contractors, delivering significant time and cost savings.

Importantly, the SCA is structured as a supportive, developmental mechanism rather than a pass/fail grading exercise. It assists suppliers in establishing their current sustainability maturity, recognising core strengths and identifying realistic opportunities for continuous operational improvement. As sustainability criteria become decisive commercial factors in winning tenders and executing contracts, the platform ensures suppliers are well-equipped with the robust, verified evidence needed to fulfil evolving client expectations.

For main contractors, the SCA provides a consistent, reliable and transparent standard to measure supply chain maturity. It offers clear data insights that help contractors satisfy demanding client requirements, demonstrate verified sustainability performance, comply with evolving reporting mandates, and manage project risks effectively across Ireland’s building sector.

Keith O’Flynn, Group Supply Chain Sustainability Manager, Sisk comments: “As sustainability requirements continue to grow, the SCA provides a reliable approach to measuring supply chain performance across multiple sustainability metrics, while reducing the burden of multiple assessments for suppliers. It delivers valuable insights for Founding Partners and gives suppliers a recognised benchmark to demonstrate innovation, best practice and continuous improvement.”

By replacing fragmented, repetitive questionnaires with a scalable, industry-led solution, the SCA strengthens commercial relationships, reduces administrative friction and positions Ireland’s entire construction supply chain for long-term competitiveness and sustainable growth.
