The construction industry workforce is predominantly male, which means testicular cancer is an issue that your teams need to be aware of. Movember, the men’s health charity, is running a health campaign called ‘Know Thy Nuts’ to raise awareness and educate men about the risks they face with testicular cancer. It is the number one cancer in young men aged 15–34 in Ireland.
The key facts
- Testicular cancer is the number one cancer in men aged 15–34 in Ireland
- The survival rate is 95% when caught early. Early detection makes an enormous difference
- A recent global study found that 62% of young men didn’t know how to self-examine. That is nearly two-thirds of the men most at risk
- Testicular cancer is one of the few cancers that men can check for themselves. Awareness is the simplest intervention available.
What every man should do
Movember is asking every man to take action for their health and to do it regularly. The message is simple: know what’s normal for your body, check regularly, and act quickly if something doesn’t feel right.
- Check regularly — once a month is enough. Get familiar with how things normally look and feel.
- Know the signs — a lump, swelling, heaviness, or any change in size or shape.
- See your GP — if something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait. Get it checked. Early action saves lives.
What companies can do
Movember is asking companies to share their free Digital Toolkit on internal channels. The toolkit is packed with resources covering:
- Understanding the facts about testicular cancer
- How to carry out a self-check
- Next steps — when and how to visit your GP if something doesn’t feel right
Share it in your internal channels, in your team WhatsApp group, in a safety briefing, or at a toolbox talk. You never know, it could reach one more person, and it could even save a life
