The Electricity Association of Ireland (EAI) and energy utility SSE are inviting third level students to compete for the opportunity to represent Ireland and the all-island electricity sector at this year’s EURELECTRIC conference, taking place in June at Vilnius, Lithuania.
EURELECTRIC is the sector association which represents the common interests of the electricity industry at a pan-European level. Every year the association hosts an annual conference to discuss European and international policy impacting on the energy and electricity sector. This year’s two-day conference in Vilnius (6-7 June), entitled ‘E-lectricity: the power sector goes digital’, will focus on the digitisation of the power sector, examining the challenges, complexities and implications of a digitalised economy for consumers and industry alike.
Students from all member countries can compete for the student award 2016 once they are sponsored by their respective national electricity association.
The EAI, which represents the electricity sector operating in the Single Electricity Market (SEM) on the island of Ireland, is inviting students from across Ireland to submit a video, infographic or animated project on any topic related to the digitisation of the power industry.
The winning project will be short-listed to represent Ireland in competing for the pan-European EURELECTRIC Student Award 2016. The national student representative will be invited to attend the conference in Lithuania in June, where the overall European winner will be announced. The award winner will be expected to present the main ideas of his or her project to an audience of around 400 delegates at the conference. At last year’s conference in Berlin, Dublin PhD student Killian McKenna fought off competition from students from across Europe to win the prestigious 2015 award.
National award sponsor SSE will not only provide the winning Ireland student with travel and accommodation for the two-day European conference but it is also presenting the winner with a new iPad, ideal for presentation preparations.
EAI Chief Executive Owen Wilson said: “The Conference typically attracts senior executives from the energy industry and European and international organisations. The EURELECTRIC Student Award is an integral part of the conference programme and provides a fantastic opportunity for young people from across Europe to engage with the electricity sector.”
Marian Troy, Head of Corporate Affairs, SSE said: “SSE is delighted to be sponsoring the EAI student representative to fly the flag for Ireland in the 2016 EURELECTRIC Student Award. Today’s finalists in this prestigious competition are the future innovators and leaders for tomorrow’s energy industry. As an energy provider that is committed to delivering a digital-first experience for our customers, we’re particularly pleased that this year’s focus is on digitising the energy industry and we’re sure this topic will generate some very exciting Award entries from third level students across Ireland.”
To enter students must be studying in Ireland or Northern Ireland, be in possession of a student card, and aged 27 years or under. Students are invited to submit a video, infographic or animated project on any topic related to the digitisation of the power industry. Please note videos / animated projects must be submitted via www.wetransfer.com.
